JDRF is the leader in setting the agenda for diabetes research worldwide, and is the largest charitable funder of and advocate for type 1 diabetes research. This September, McGeorge Cares will be the Gold Sponsor for JDRF’s Richmond Walk to Cure Diabetes held on September 18, 2011 at Byrd Park-Dogwood Dell area. By sponsoring this event, McGeorge Cares hopes to achieve JDRF’s mission to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research.


McGeorge Cares is proud to announce our newest community partner for the month of August, Comfort Zone Camp. Comfort Zone Camp is a non-profit bereavement camp that transforms the lives of children who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, or primary caregiver. The free camps include confidence-building programs and age-based support groups that break the emotional isolation grief often brings. Because their camps and online resources are offered at no charge, Comfort Zone is 100-percent funded by contributions. This month McGeorge Cares will provide enough funding to send 5 children to attend an upcoming camp. McGeorge Cares hopes to achieve Comfort Zone Camp’s mission to provide grieving children with a voice, a place and a community in which to heal, grow and lead more fulfilling lives.


McGeorge Cares is proud to announce our newest community partner for the month of July, FRIENDS Association for Children. FRIENDS Association for Children is a non-profit child and family agency that has served the Richmond, Virginia community since 1871. It operates three multi-service, state-of-the-art family centers in neighborhoods where the opportunity to succeed does not come easy. This month McGeorge Cares will sponsor FRIENDS Summer Program 2011, giving the children involved the opportunity to attend an exciting summer field trip. McGeorge Cares hopes to achieve FRIENDS Association for Children’s mission to help children and families achieve their potential and become productive citizens.


McGeorge Cares is proud to announce our newest community partner for the month of June, Virginia Cancer Patient Fund. This month McGeorge Cares will be the Lunch and Dinner Sponsor for their Third Annual Charity Golf Tournament held on June 20, 2011 at the Birkdale Golf Club. The donations and funds raised at this event make an immediate impact on the lives of so many people suffering from the affects of cancer. The funds VCPF provide help them focus on treatment and recovery. McGeorge Cares hopes to achieve the Virginia Cancer Patient Fund’s mission to provide immediate financial assistance for cancer patients and their families.

This month McGeorge Cares will be a hole-in-one car sponsor for the Spring Golf Outing held on May 31, 2011 at the Stonehenge Golf and Country Club, which benefits Richmond Special Olympics athletes attending the 2011 Summer Games. McGeorge Cares hopes to achieve the Special Olympics mission to give people with intellectual disabilities continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Community Idea Stations is a non-profit that works hard to provide relevant radio programming to the public of Central Virginia. This month McGeorge Cares will sponsor ‘Car Talk’ a WCVE Public Radio show on Saturday mornings at 10:30am. McGeorge Cares hopes to achieve the Community Ideas Stations mission to strengthen communities, empower families, and inform citizens by using the power of media to educate, entertain and inspire.

On Thursday, February 10, 2011, CHIP will host the 6th Annual CHOCOHOLIC! event, encouraging people to the mission of CHIP. CHIP of Greater Richmond enriches the lives of children and the community by providing comprehensive services, in partnership with parents, to improve the overall health, well-being and independence of families. McGeorge Cares hopes to help make this event the largest and most successful one yet.
January 12, 2011 – Cox Media Group – Richmond (WKHK K95, WKLR 96.5, WHTI Hot 100.9, WURV 103.7 The River) and Virginia Blood Services joined forces for the Resolution Blood Drive 2011 on January 10th at the Sheraton Park South. This annual blood drive collected 207 pints of blood and over the past 3 years, the event has collected 971 pints of blood. With each pint saving 3 lives, that’s almost 3,000 lives saved.
The event took place from 7am-7pm in the ballroom of the Sheraton Park South, 9901 Midlothian Turnpike. All four CMG – Richmond stations broadcasted live all day, encouraging listeners to come out and help save lives. “The Resolution Blood Drive is a great example of the impact local radio can have on the community,” said CMG – Richmond VP and Market Manager, Bob Willoughby. “We are proud to be associated with such a worthy cause.”
Historically, January is the month with the most crucial need for blood donations and this year was no different. Virginia Blood Services is the sole provider of blood to all area Richmond hospitals. Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States.
It has been the leader in one-to-one youth service for more than a century, developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of young people. Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors children, ages 6 through 18, in both school-based and community-based environments.
National research has shown that positive relationships between youth and their Big Brothers and Big Sisters mentors have a direct and measurable impact on children’s lives. By participating in our youth mentoring programs, Little Brothers and Sisters are:
- More confident in their schoolwork performance
- Able to get along better with their families
- 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
- 27% less likely to begin using alcohol
- 52% less likely to skip school.
In Richmond, the Big Brothers program began with the help of the Richmond Jaycees in 1962. The Big Sisters program was added in 1976. The Richmond office serves the Metro Richmond area. and the Tri-Cities office, founded in 1989 in Petersburg, is now located in Hopewell.
Virgnia is home to nine BBBS affiliated agencies, of which metro Richmond is the eldest.
